Micro-Niche Betting Systems

Do niche betting systems return a profit?

Most people will be familiar with the idea of using a set of ‘rules’ to establish a selection in a horse race. Using a set of rules and filters allows us to develop ‘systems’ for picking horses, and these systems can vary in complexity from the most simple, to those that become very involved and more time-consuming to operate.

For example, two very basic betting systems would be to pick the favourite in any given race, or to pick the horse carrying top-weight in a handicap race.

When you start adding other variables such as trainers, jockeys, courses, going conditions, betting prices, different times of the year, distances, class of race, and so on, you can imagine how complicated some betting systems can be. For example, backing any horse trained by Barry Hills aged two to four years old, running at Haydock in a race of between seven furlongs and one mile six furlongs.

Of course, the goal of most punters when using a betting system will be to make an overall profit. Doubtless I do not need to tell you that backing the favourite in every race will not make you any money over any significant period of time. So it probably will not surprise you to learn that the simplest mechanical betting systems tend not to be profitable.

You will be far more likely to find a good betting system if you are prepared to dig a little deeper into the form and statistics, to find an obscure angle and a small ‘profit opportunity’.

Over the years I have researched a specialised portfolio of mechanical betting systems. I refer to these as my micro-niche betting systems. Each of these will represent a fairly obscure sub-trend, but each has produced a profit over the long term. Most are very simple in nature, but because they highlight only relatively few selections, viewed on their own they do not provide much action. However, when brought together as a whole these systems will usually provide quite a few opportunities to bet each week.

Of course, this method is not an exact science…. we rely upon historical trends continuing, and systems are continually in their own independent cycles of profitability. But this approach regularly highlights some big price horses that the ‘form experts’ have overlooked.

Will I Make A Lot Of Money From Micro-Niche Betting Systems?

At this point, I should set some expectations… I am not suggesting that having a portfolio of well-resarched betting systems will provide you with a life-changing income. Many (in fact the majority) of the horses highlighted by my own systems fail to win. But on the other hand, you will find more than your fair share of winners with this strategy, and more than a few of these at very decent prices.

If you are diligent in finding the best prices about your selections, I would expect you to see your investment in stakes more than covered by your winnings.
