Pro-punter Dave Nevison

Dave Nevison has been a professional punter for sixteen years, and has managed to make a profit every year. He writes a regular column in Racing And Football Outlook and appears regularly on Racing UK in a punditry capacity. His book “A Bloody Good Winner” is a best seller.

In the article above, Dave was appearing as a guest speaker at the London Racing Club. The assembled audience that night had gathered, armed with pens and paper, to note all the money-making points to be learned; after which, punting would be easy.

In reality, nothing much changes, and there are no secrets. Making your betting pay can be distilled down to a few key fundamentals.

Dave gave some general advice. For instance, he said

…what sets punters apart from each other, divides them into the sheep and the goats, is the sort of mind that is betrayed by a punter who wants, say, 8/1 about a horse but cannot get that price and accepts 11/2.

Of course, he is referring to the importance of getting the price about a horse that you want, to secure value in your bet, as opposed to following the herd and accepting any old price.

On the night, he also criticized the majority of aspirational bettors, saying “…they don’t pressure themselves to the point of wanting to jump out a window”. A scathing remark maybe, but this raised a wry smile on my part, as I produced a video a few months back titled “Betting With A Gun To Your Head” which alludes to the same thing – taking your betting seriously if you really want to make it pay.

What other charateristics do you think make a successful punter?

Hi John, Welcome to the blog. I think Dave Nevison has one of those personalities you either like, or else he rubs you up the wrong way. Doesn’t alter the fact though, that he’s been able to make his betting pay. Cheers, Paul
